This report presents a summary record of the First Stage Consultation for the Landscape Value Mapping of Hong Kong. The Consultation ran from 1st July to 2nd September 2002. It included a range of activities to inform both public and stakeholders of the findings of the initial stage of the Study. It also offered an opportunity for them to contribute positive ideas, which the Study could take forward.

The initial stage of the Study, dealt mainly with study methodology and approach, issues which are theoretical and technical in nature. A considerable effort was made to make the consultation documents understandable to the layman and questions about the Hong Kong landscape were presented to allow the public to provide feedback.

The range of individuals and groups who participated in the consultation was wide and they addressed a range of issues in their comments. We were pleased to note that on the whole, comments were fair and constructive, demonstrating the consultees' awareness of the Study and its key issues.

The level of public interest shown in the consultation, the support for the Study and the public acceptance of the Study's direction were particularly notable. It is fair to say that the Study was welcomed almost unanimously as a relevant process in facilitating the future strategic planning in Hong Kong to adequately reflect the state of its landscape.

The Study Team would like to thank all those who took part in the First Stage Consultation, who gave their time, shared their experience and donated their expertise to help refine the Study methodology and, we hope, ultimately to enrich its findings.
